While Firefighters are committed to the meaningful work of protecting life, property, and the environment in the districts they serve, Food on the Stove is dedicated to giving back to these expert rescuers by addressing the leading cause of death among firefighters–heart disease. The goal of Food on The Stove is to increases awareness about health and wellness within the fire service by providing tools and resources to help members live healthier lifestyles with heart healthy eating practices and fitness activities. One of the ways we do this is through our Local Food for Local Heroes initiative, through which we provides locally sourced food from local farms and vendors.

On October 29th, we were blessed to serve the members of Engine 11, Truck Company 6, Battallion Chief 4 and EMS 4. The 3-course dinner was prepared and served by the amazing Chef Brazil Murphy of Spyce Co. (www.spyceco.com) along with DCFD’s own Shanita Johnson of Sassycakes of DC making local Sweet Potato Pound Cake for dessert.  The menu consisted of:

1st Course
Grilled Shrimp Salad
w/ pickled onions, chevre, grilled local squash, and red pepper vinaigrette

2nd Course
Citrus Garlic & Herb Chicken
w/ roasted fingerling potatoes and grilled asparagus

3rd Course
Local Sweet Potato Pound Cake
w/ organic vanilla ice cream
